Twenty years ago, on New Year’s Day (1992) – I made a New Year’s resolution after the death of my mother who died of a stroke, my first husband who died of cancer and subsequently my beloved relatives who have also passed over the years of heart disease to live a healthier life. Every passing year I'd recommit myself to that original New Year’s resolution made 20 years ago.

Since my family history is rampant with heart disease and weight control issues as a major cause of death for my relatives, at the age of 36 I too was diagnosed with high blood pressure 174/110. Although active in yoga and hiking, carefully watching my weight and diet my commitment to my personal health was not enough to hold back my heredity.
 
What I have learnt over these years is weight is not something that is inherited or genetic.  It is a learnt behaviour that can be undone and replaced with better eating habits.  In the last 4 years, I have chosen to stop consuming milk, refined sugars, wheat, gluten (due celiac disease) and just recently, I naturally have lost the desire for coffee, soy cappuccino, to be precise for no apparent reason. I was a 5-6 cups a day girl and wouldn’t even think of starting my day without it! That was just unthinkable!

Over the years, I have been vigilant and relentless about my health and wellbeing. Chris Howard, a world reknowned coach says, “Physical health and wellbeing is achieved when you are in absolute rapport with your body. When what was once a poor or a bad habit for you ceases to be a habit; and you unconsciously choose health and wellbeing.”

Now in 2012, I have realised the result my 20 year long journey towards health and wellbeing, my blood pressure is 100/70 (the best it has ever been), my weight is 57 Kg (125 pounds) and waist measurement is 71.1 cm (28 inches), which is 4.5 Kg (10 pounds) and 5.1 cm (2 inches) more than when I was 17 years old. Not bad for a 49 years old, pushing 50. In the last 4 years I have now been able to maintain consistently great vital signs/weight, significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and overcome weight concerns!  Bring on the next 30 years, I say!!!
